After more than a decade helping others achieve financial stability, Damara Parra realized it was time to invest in her own professional growth. Enrolling in an online master’s program prepared her to take that next step.
Iowa State University’s family financial planning specialization of the online family and consumer sciences master’s program was designed for working professionals like Damara. It’s 30-credit format makes it possible to earn an advanced degree while balancing career and personal commitments. For Parra, it was exactly the opportunity she was seeking.
“It gave me the confidence to pursue the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation, which is a big step toward expanding my work beyond financial counseling,” said Parra. “The master’s program at Iowa State University caught my eye because it is CFP Board-registered, flexible for someone like me who works full-time, and it has an excellent reputation.”
Parra has spent the last 14 years in the financial industry and currently leads the Financial Empowerment & Advocacy Unit at the New York Legal Assistance Group. As an accredited financial counselor, she helps New York residents achieve financial stability and navigate life’s challenges.
“I am truly passionate about helping people understand complex financial concepts and helping them achieve financial stability and well-being. This career path allows me to blend my passion with advanced planning skills to support individuals and families through their financial journeys.”
The fully online format allowed Parra to choose the program that worked best for her, regardless of the institution’s location. With an established career in Queens, New York, she was able to pursue the online program at Iowa State, fitting it into her professional life while gaining the advanced education she was looking for.
“Completing this degree while working full-time was challenging, but it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career,” says Parra. “This program has enhanced my ability to lead my team by deepening my expertise in complex financial concepts. It indeed marks the beginning of a new phase of my professional life.”
Through courses in advanced financial planning and client-centered advising, the program strengthened Parra’s ability to guide individuals through complex financial decisions. Program graduates are prepared to pursue advanced certifications and leadership opportunities while also emphasizing the relational aspects of personal finance.
“I came out not only more knowledgeable, but also more resilient, resourceful, and confident in tackling complex problems. It pushed me to think critically and adapt quickly. Plus, the faculty provided amazing support and fostered a real sense of community.”
That support extended well beyond the online classroom. Parra said her professors made the courses approachable and engaging despite the distance and became mentors throughout her academic journey – even tailoring her practicum experience to align with her long-term goals.
“The curriculum is challenging, and I appreciate that the professors are experienced professionals, some of them CFPs themselves, who are actively working in the field.”
The pinnacle moment for Damara? Finally meeting the professors who had supported her throughout the program. Parra made the 5-hour flight from New York to Ames last winter to participate in commencement, a fitting celebration of the next chapter in her career.
