Iowa State University launches new online masters in user experience design 

Iowa State University announces the launch of the online master of arts in user experience design. A combined effort between the departments of graphic and industrial design, the program is intentionally designed for working professionals looking to advance in industries where humans and technology intersect.

The degree was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents and will welcome its first students this August.

“Design is everywhere,” said Subinay Malhotra, assistant professor of industrial design. “Industry is moving toward entire ecosystems of service design. Every product has an app or a computer interface as a part of its function or service.”

Iowa State University’s online master’s degree in user experience design offers a 30-credit curriculum that combines foundational theory with hands-on application.  More than just current software, the program will provide students with the holistic perspectives of human-centered design principles, product development skills and graphic design fundamentals to design across the entire product lifecycle.

Demand for user experience professionals is on the rise. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, roles such as web and digital interface designers have been named a “Bright Outlook Occupation,” reflecting strong projected job growth.

“We are really excited about the opportunity to help educate future user experience design professionals,” said Patrick Finley, assistant professor of graphic design. “This program will give them well-rounded knowledge about user experience research as well as front-end implementation and back-end development.”
