Tuition and Fees

Students enrolled exclusively in online programs are charged tuition and a mandatory technology fee based on their specific degree program and the number of credits taken.

The Distance Education Tuition and Mandatory Fees Table breaks down tuition and technology fees* by credit and gives an estimated cost for a single semester for students ONLY in online programs. Find your program in the table and click the “Details by Credit Hour” link to see how much your tuition and fees will be for your degree program and the number of credits you plan to take per semester.

*Please note: this is an estimate of tuition, and the rate is subject to change by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

Your Investment, Your Future

  • Technology Fee:
    • All students will be charged a technology fee each semester they are enrolled. The technology fee covers things such as technology maintenance, support systems, Workday, Canvas, and university email.
  • Additional Fees:
    • If you’re enrolled in an online program and an on-campus program, additional fees — like the activity, health, and health facility fees—will apply alongside tuition and the technology fee.
  • Support Services:
    • Students in online programs also benefit from a comprehensive array of support services, including personalized academic advising and support, library access, career services, mental health and well-being resources, and more, all designed to help you succeed.
  • Activity Fee:
    • Students who live near Iowa State and would like access to Recreation Services, CyRide, and Cyclone Athletics events can request to be charged the Student Activity Fee.

You will receive a tuition bill at the start of each semester and have multiple options for payment, including deferred billing and through employer reimbursement deferment.

Immigration regulations require international students to verify the availability of financial resources to pay for all their educational, living and other expenses (and those of any dependents) for the duration of their studies prior to the issuance of the Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 to obtain a visa to enter the United States.

If you’re not looking for a degree but still want to challenge yourself and learn something new, you may take classes as a nondegree-seeking student. You are welcome to take classes part-time or full-time without working toward a degree at Iowa State. As a nondegree online student, you will be assessed tuition and fees based on your residency, including all mandatory fees. Please note that this is an estimate of tuition, and the rate is subject to change.
