Leadership Through Intentional Growth

Leadership Through Intentional Growth

Zach Stuart knew exactly what he needed to set himself up for career growth—a program that would not only deepen his business acumen but also provide the flexibility to fit into his demanding schedule. Iowa State University’s Professional Master of Business Administration (PMBA) program delivered on both fronts, meeting Zach’s needs and helping him take decisive steps toward his future. For Zach, earning a master’s degree online was a strategic move to prepare for future leadership roles.

Stuart, who has spent his entire career at John Deere, knew that to reach the leadership roles he aspires to, he needed to round out his business acumen and gain a broader perspective. Iowa State’s top-ranked PMBA program offered him exactly what he needed—a flexible, hybrid format that fit into his busy life and a curriculum that spoke directly to his goals.

Stuart’s story is one of intentional growth. By tackling head-on the subjects that he once considered weak spots – like accounting and finance—he transformed potential vulnerabilities into strengths. These new skills not only enhanced his day-to-day work as a program manager but also opened doors to future leadership opportunities. “This degree has given me the potential to jump into leadership roles,” Stuart shared. “It’s setting me up well for success.”

Stuart credited one of his professors, James Summers, PhD, with helping develop a mindset that emphasizes intentional growth. “Dr. Summers was a great mentor. He encouraged us to take on a growth mindset.”

“A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, hard work, and a willingness to learn rather than being fixed traits,” explained Summers.

Stuart said that he was able to apply a growth mindset to his role at John Deere, taking Summers’ advice to heart. “Coming from a business background and jumping into program management with some of John Deere’s top technology, I didn’t have the best understanding of the engineering aspects of my programs,” Stuart shared. “But bringing that growth mindset into my work instead of just saying I’ll never understand it, I started to really learn and listen to our engineers and what they need.”

Networking played a pivotal role in Stuart’s experience, too. He formed lasting relationships with classmates and professors. These connections are a professional network and a source of ongoing support and inspiration. “We plan to get together regularly, not just to catch up, but to discuss business ideas that can help us all grow.”

Stuart’s advice to others considering furthering their education is clear, “If you want to be a leader in your company someday, get a PMBA. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.” For him, the master’s degree was about actively preparing for what comes next.

Stuart isn’t just envisioning his next step; he’s already on his way there. His story is a powerful example of intentional growth and the impact of investing in yourself. For Stuart, and for many others, the path to “next” starts with a decision to invest in yourself—and to get there, Iowa State is the partner that makes it possible.
